Population, Poverty, and the Local Environment
By: Partha S. Dasgupta
Key Points:
*Many blame population as the cause poverty ; however some suggest that poverty causes the increase of population.
*There are several reasons that can lead to high population rates; demography proves this.
*Some countries that are submerged in poverty and over-population find that the two come hand in hand along with the infant mortality rates as well as diseases.
* Sub-Saharan Africa has an average of about 7 for their fertility rate.
* Gender inequality pushes women to produce offspring despite their wishes.
*Half of a woman's adult life is sent taking care of the baby; often losing opportunities to better her lifestyle; such as getting better education.
*Sometimes human rights are violated such as abuse for refusing pregnancy, or taking pills.
*Third World countries are, more prone for overpopulation due to high fertility rates in hopes of producing a boy as well as high infant mortality rates.
Summary:
The main point if the article is to shed light upon the cause of poverty and over population. It is emphasized that it is not a single issue that causes everything to go awry. Much like the environment and the connections of species with one another, demography has several counterparts that create the current population and conditions in the specific region. Furthermore the author provides some reasoning to high fertility rate and the solutions to these problems. Specifically to empower women to fight for their basic human rights; to seek for higher education, take control of their pregnancy, and even to obtain a job. Due to the dependencies of women on their husbands, they are left financially incapable to provide for themselves. The abusive environment is then strengthened due to the isolation of the woman.
Opinion
The lack of women rights in other countries caught my attention the most due to their ancient-like position in a family. They are objectified, simply things alive with the sole purpose of providing their husband a child and to take care of said offspring. Their ignorance to the resources that are available to them to control their pregnancy is surprising. Also its interesting to find the different forces that contributes to population growth and how unemployment can play a big role on demography. There are also parts of demography that se illogical yet it has occurred over and over again throughout history with different countries such as high birthrates despite poverty issues. It also poses new questions such as the topic of the world's resources and the carrying capacity r the human population.
