Researchers have recently revealed that mature mother fishes are detrimental to both the ecosystem and the economy. In this particular event, the larger the fish means more money. More specifically, humans aim for the larger female fish; this is due to the number of offspring it can produce, relies largely depend on the size of this fish. Therefore the bigger the fish, the higher its clutch size it will have. The difference between how many offspring it will produce will be substantial to the desire of people to obtain it. However with this, less fish are born due to the mature ones being hunted down.
Reflection
This provides the importance of clutch size of any individual species. Furthermore it provides insight to the reason some of the species are collapsing, without mature females; the species will fail and eventually be extinct due to lack of reproduction. These fish are very important to our way of living because they are the ones that spawn the rest of the fish that we catch and eat. The danger in this is if we are capturing the female fish, it will eliminate the main producer of the rest of the species. I think these fish should not be captured because we need them to reproduce the next generation. I also believe that we must ensure their safety and ultimately the preservation of the species by enforcing rules against catching big mother fish.
Next Steps?
The most logical solution to this issue is to set up regulations that prevent the capture of these fish. If this occurs, then optimistically, fishermen will see the reason behind the regulation and they will stop capturing the female fish so they can grow and reproduce. The opportunity cost that capturing these fish threatens not only their species but the community or ecosystem that also rely on them. For the one big fish that we capture, we are running the risk that the hundreds of fish that the BOFFFF will produce. Therefore we are getting in the way of our own profit for the future due to our short-sightedness. If we are able to stop the capture of these BOFFFF's then we will always have a sustainable source of fish.
