Human Population Grows Up
By: Joel E. Cohen
*Proposes Social Security reforms in the U.S.
* Public forgets that there is a life expectancy of each person and the different types of rates in which reproduction happens throughout different areas.
*The U.S. uses immigration to bring in working class people in order to avoid a demographic crisis from the baby boom.
*The average life expectancy 30 years at the beginning of the 20th century
* The average life expectancy was 65 years at the beginning of the 21st century
*Japan has the highest life expectancy in the world; so much so that they have a top-heavy type of demographic graph due to the declined birthrate.
*“the inhabited earth being 13,385 times larger than Holland yields 13,385,000,000 human beings on the earth,” or an upper limit of roughly 13.4 billion.
*Before 2000, younger people or even working class people were largely dominated the population of the world; however due now it is the opposite.
*Since 2007 urbanization has taken over and dominate the rural sections of the earth.
*Human population grew the most during the 20th century with very high rates of birthrate and low death rates the growth rate was exponentially enormous; it is very likely that that was the peak of our growth rate.
Summary
Main point of the article is to provide insight upon the carrying capacity of the world. To make known that our growing population is doing so exponentially; and although it seems to be slowing down; it may not be enough to save the resources of this planet. The larger our population grows; the more we need to survive, the less resources we have as a whole planet. The author lectures about consequences and various aspects of demography that take part in the growth of our species. It illustrates the complex relationships of humans to their environment and ultimately to each other and other organisms. In a relatively short amount of time, humans have about doubled their life expectancy which results in the decline of death rate which case problem to the future generation and supplies.
Opinion
I believe that the author raises concerns as to how the human population will be able to survive. It appears that the end of the world or in this case the end of the human species is largely in part will be dependent upon their actions. I think people do not realize the threat of the carrying capacity of the Earth; not only this but also hoe selfish and self-righteous this species has become. We see ourselves as superior to the other species and we do not simply view ourselves as a part of this world but its' makes. In my opinion we are not the maker of this world but the ones that will ultimately destroy it. The population need to realize family planning and consider the aftermath of our mass consumption. This will not only drive some species to extinction but also ultimately hurt ourselves. Is the human greed and ignorance so deeply engraved in their mind that it blinds us of our demise?
