Scrapes: Toxics in Your Hair
Summary:
There are treatments found in Brazil that is used to help the hair become frizz free, and in the process straighten it. This product was keratin-based and it came from Brazil. These types of products are used in the salon often referred to as a Brazilian Blowout. Said product contained high levels of toxins called carcinogen formaldehyde and methylene glycol. It is believed that small doses of formaldehyde is safe, however with too much of it has detrimental results. A hairstylist from Oregon used this product and was affected by the toxins immediately; the stylist got nosebleeds, irritation of the eye, and had respiratory issues. It was found that the amount of formaldehyde was 6.3-10.6% when the safe amount must be less that 0.2%; this is what caused the problems the stylist experienced. After this incident more complaints about said product resurfaced world wide and ultimately the product is in the process of being banned legally due to the unsafe chemicals in the product.
Reflection:
I found this article to be informational and ultimately eye opening. Often people do not realize that things that they put on and in their body can bee damaging. There is a false security that is built in the consumer's mind that products which are available in the market is safe to use. The public are ignorant to the amount of chemicals and toxins that we ingest daily. It is scary to think the fast reactions of our body to chemicals that we use and things that can build up in our body. Furthermore it is ridiculous that the public do not have regulations from the law helping them keep safe. It is odd that the government do not have higher standards for prevention of these things from happening. It makes one wonder how the body is able to survive to so much abuse from unnatural resources in the modern day society.
