Hawaiian White Hibiscus (Hibiscus Waimeae)
The Hawaiian White Hibiscus is small in size; they are often seen on gray-barked tree that can grow up to 30 feet tall. The leaves of these flowers looks light green on the surface, however, the lower surface look like a shade of grey due to the cuticle of the leaf. The round or oval leaves vary from 2 to 7 inches in length and 1 to 5 inches in width. The flowers that bloom are only present for the whole day; once they bloom and open in the morning, it appears white however eventually fade into pink colors. These flowers are located at the ends of the branches often to attract the pollinators; this explains the vibrant colors and strong scent. These flowers grow or can be found in Kaua’i; their natural habitat are moist forests. Due to the vibrant colors of hibiscus flowers, scientists or florists often cross pollinate for its’ visual appeal. However because of this, this species are endangered due to lack of parent species cross pollinating within the same species. Furthermore they are over used for aesthetic reasons, also contributes to the declining population. |
California Tiger Salamander- Ambystoma californiense
The California Tiger Salamander has chunky body, almost a snake-like body structure ranging between 7 through 8 inches in length; it has a broad, rounded snout. The adults often are black with yellow and cream spots and their eggs are green in color. They also have brown eyes with black irises. It is located in California (Santa Barbara); their natural habitats are often vernal pools and seasonal ponds. It is endangered due to predation from exotic species such as the American Bullfrog. The estimated population ranges from 10,000-100,000; they are also suffering from loss of habitat due to over grazing as well as urbanization of their natural homes. American Black Bear (Ursus Americanus)
These bears are often found or located in North America (Northern Canada). They are medium sized; some having a white crescent moon on their chest that contrast their sleek black overall color. They have a broad skull and narrow muzzles and big hinges for their jaws. They have short rounded claws and they easily adapt to human presence. They have a lifespan that lasts between 18-25 years. They were decimated for their fur. Many hunted them for both the fur as well as trophies for the hunters. Also this species fight for their food against wolves and other bigger predators. Due to both competition and human impacts, they were exploited. Furthermore they are notorious for attacking campers; often it is because of lack of food and habitat. |
